Message from Ben:
“It was a hot and sunny mid-morning when, after having found some balls in the surrounding bushes, I picked up a plank of wood and started to paddle away at the practice wall. I had been at if for four hours before realizing I was late and my mum was gonna have my tush for it. There and then my love for tennis had begun. This same beautiful game would take me to six continents and over 15 countries around the world as I gathered tremendous experience and exposure as a player and aspiring teacher. I never thought I would find myself in a northern country, blessed with four beautiful seasons. Here in the land of snow, ducks, ice and beavers, I am still enjoying my true calling of teaching tennis amongst exceptional teachers, sharing their love of wisdom and learning.

Personal Comment :
My motivation for teaching: What is more fulfilling than to see players hitting their first overhead or backhand slice? Any coach understands that feeling of accomplishment when a student starts to grasp what you are teaching. It's a one-of-a-kind experience. This kind of pleasure keeps me motivated to teach tennis.

Experience from tennis: The thing I learned from tennis is that If you have the mentality to never to give up, you can truly "give it your best." Even if you have a bad day or don’t feel great, you can still try your best at that moment, with the resources you have available. There are some big waves, but we can make it to the other side if we stay steady and never stop!

Playing Highlights: Ranked in the top 25 in Ontario and top 50 in Canada as a junior. I won several tournaments as a competitive player. As a varsity athlete at Brock University, I was named the tennis team’s rookie of the year.
Personal Comment: I was only able to compete at an elite level until age 14, after sustaining a serious injury. While rehabbing, I turned to coaching to keep involved in the sport. Coaching quickly became a passion for me, as I have learned the joys of helping players at various levels, from age 4 to 84.

Personal Message or Motto:
I was 19 years old when I found out I loved tennis, I was playing semi-pro soccer while studying music in UK, and I came back to the OAC during the Christmas holidays. My friend and mentor Carlo Zambri was playing in a tournament (Endless Summer year 1) so I watched his match, and went to the bar with the guys afterwards for what has become the traditional Quarter finals party. During the typical bar banter, the idea was floated that I would lose to a 9 year old girl if I attempted to step out on the court again, I had taken lessons when I was extremely young ages 5-10 but hadn't touched a racquet since. Being the cocky 19 year old who thought he was an amazing athlete, I confidently told them they were insane. Carlo organised the match for the following day. I arrived at the OAC feeling a little bit bad for my poor young opponent and even more so when she was introduced to me, she was at most half my height, had glasses, and pig-tails. I was not intimidated, and it turned out neither was she. I went on to lose in glorious fashion 6-0, 6-0 and I've been in love with the game ever since.
I've tried to spend as much time as possible on court since that moment, improving and learning, and now I'm very lucky to be able to share my enthusiasm and passion for the game with everyone who comes to the NTS!
